The Impossible Quiz: a quiz that is really a puzzle game
The Impossible Quiz came out on Newgrounds and deviantART in February 2007, drawn and coded in Flash by a British animator who goes by Splapp-me-do. It looks like a trivia game — a numbered question, four boxes — and for about three questions it behaves like one. Then it starts cheating. The right answer is a pun, or a word inside the question, or not in the boxes at all: one question wants the mouse dragged around the outside of the screen, another wants a letter dragged off a word, another wants you to click a specific '42' out of fifty. There are 110 questions and no save, so every attempt starts from question one, which is why people who finish it remember the whole thing.
The version on this site is the original SWF, the 'quiet' release without the music track, served from this domain and run through Ruffle, the open-source Flash player written in Rust. Nothing hotlinks to Newgrounds and nothing needs a plugin; it loads on a school Chromebook in a few seconds and plays with a mouse or a touchpad. The two sequels (The Impossible Quiz 2 and The Impossible Quizmas) are not here — the copies we could find are incomplete, and we would rather list one game that runs than three that stop at question five.
Controls & mechanics
| Action | Control | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Answer | Left click on a box | Picks that answer; wrong answers cost one of your three lives |
| Trick questions | Click words, drag objects, move the mouse | When there are no boxes, the question itself is the interface — a word in it, an object to drag, or a path to trace with the cursor |
| Skip | Click a green arrow, bottom right | Jumps the current question. The arrows start grey; you collect up to seven during the quiz, and question 110 needs every one of them |
| Bomb questions | Answer before the timer reaches 0 | The red bomb counts down, usually from ten seconds; running out is a game over, not a lost life |
| Restart | Click Try Again on the game-over screen | There is no checkpoint — every run starts from question 1 |
How to get further than question 10
- Read the question as a sentence, not a quiz: 'Answer this question backwards' wants 'K.O.', because the box that says O.K. read backwards is the answer. 'Click the answer' means click the words 'the answer' in the question. Almost every trick is hiding in the wording.
- Never spend a skip: You start with no skips and pick them up at certain questions along the way — seven in total. Question 110 asks for all seven at once, so a skip used on a hard question in the middle is a run that is already lost; you just do not know it yet.
- Learn the mazes with a slow hand: Question 5 ('Put the mouse on here') and the later mazes kill you for touching the walls, and they punish a cursor that leaves the frame. Go around the outside of the maze along the edge of the play area, slowly, and do it with a mouse rather than a touchpad if you can.
- Treat every run as memorising, not guessing: With three lives and no save, a first attempt is scouting. Note what each question wants; the answers never change and the order never changes, so a finished run is a sequence you have learned, not a lucky one.
- Watch for the bomb before you read: On bomb questions the fuse is already burning while you read. Glance at the counter first, then decide whether it is a question you know or a question to skip — but remember the skip rule above.
Key features
- The original 2007 game: Not a remake: the actual Flash file, all 110 questions, the same drawings and the same jokes, including the ones that have not aged well.
- Runs without Flash: Ruffle translates the SWF in the browser. No plugin, no extension, nothing to install on a managed Chromebook.
- Mouse only: There is no keyboard in the quiz at all, so it plays on a touchpad or a touch screen as well as a mouse.
- Served from this site: The SWF and the Ruffle player are hosted on theimpossiblequiz.co, so the game does not depend on any third-party host staying up.

Pro tip: Question 42 shows a screen full of '42's and asks for the answer to life, the universe and everything. The answer is the 42nd '42' — count along the rows, left to right, top to bottom. People lose all three lives here by clicking the biggest one.
